second installment of the Connections series in which I interview businesses that are connected to Axon Academy.
In a previous life, I was a fiction writer. I met many wonderful writers, agents, editors. Teresa Funke was one of the first. She was very supportive of me as a newbie and we have continued our friendship after I shelved. I'm thrilled that she is launching a new book very soon, Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life, due out Oct. 1, 2019
Here is Part I of the interview:
1. Describe what you do.
I am the author of seven books of historical fiction set in World War II and based on interviews with real people. Two of my books, Remember Wake and Dancing in Combat Boots, are for adults and teens. Five are part of my Home-Front Heroes collection for middle-grade readers ages 8-13. I am also the upcoming author of a new nonfiction book called Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life, due out Oct. 1, 2019. The book is based on my popular blog by the same name. I am also a professional speaker, a writing consultant, and the creator of the Self-
2. How did this business come about?
In the fall of 1991, shortly after getting married, I left behind two dead-in jobs that I hated. I had always wanted to be a writer but was told it was a hobby, not a profession. I decided to see if that was true. So I started a freelance writing business and wrote for magazines and newspapers, first in Idaho, and then in Colorado. I’ve been running my writing business for 28 years now! I’ve done freelance writing, commercial writing, and published numerous short stories, essays, and books. I added two additional revenue streams with my coaching/consulting and my public speaking. I’m known for also establishing unique partner programs that allow me to work directly with nonprofits and our schools to increase literacy and preserve history. No two days look alike for me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
3. What brought you to Northern Colorado?
I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho and was eager to try living somewhere else, and I assumed freelance opportunities would be higher for me outside of Boise. So my husband got a transfer with HP to Fort Collins back in 1992. We’ve been here happily ever since!
4. What do you offer that is unique to your business?
I offer several things that are unique to my business! I have numerous sponsor and partner programs that allow me to provide free classroom and reading group sets of books to schools in need, and programs to help me donate books to organizations that work with at-risk and low-income kids to ensure they own books, and programs to help me bring World War II education into the classrooms. In other unique offerings, I have a one-woman show based on my book Dancing in Combat Boots, and my daughter and I are working on a children’s play based on my book Wave Me Good-bye. That is to say nothing about some of the unique things I do through my speaking and consulting. And stay tuned for some VERY exciting new offerings via my new website www.burstsofbrilliance.com, which will launch in a couple of months. We’ll have everything there from merchandise to a membership site to stir and support your creative spirit.
